In 2016, with the help of Science Education Specialist Dr. Jane Maxwell, I developed a “Choice Project” for use in Organic Chemistry for the Biological Sciences (CHEM 233). This assignment was inspired by the “writing to learn” concept and aims to provide an opportunity for students to connect course content to their own interests. Additionally, it allows for creative thinking and broadens assessment of learning.
I made the project optional as a pilot. Most students reported spending 4-6 hours on their project. The most popular formats were infographics and videos.
I used ComPAIR for peer assessment during the second pilot, which is UBC-developed, centrally supported open-source software tool.
